Twitter Ban: PDP Reps Walk Out During Plenary

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the House of Representatives staged a walkout during the plenary sessions due to the refusal of the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila to order the Federal Government to lift the Twitter Ban.

During deliberations over the Twitter Ban, it was resolved that the relevant committees of the House of Representatives investigate the matter within 10 days. Afterwards, the leader of the PDP caucus Kingsley Chinda raised a point of order and prayed that the House directs the Federal Government to lift the ban pending the determination of the investigation.

According to Chinda, if the ban is not lifted, the rights of Nigerians would be kept in abeyance during the period. In response, Gbajabiamila cited part of the Standing Orders of the House stating that a matter that had been concluded by the parliament cannot be revisited for a debate and therefore ruled Chinda out of order, a decision that did not go down well with the members of the opposition.

Insisting on speaking and several leaders of the House shutting him down, Chinda led other PDP members out of the chamber. He later said that his action was in defence of Nigerians in his address to journalists.
