Aftermath of Wednesday’s ruling of the Supreme Court which narrowly upheld the October 10 election of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, AbujaCityJournal exclusively understands that the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee is considering jetting out to London to seek audience with President Muhammadu Buhari.
The plan, this newspaper learnt, is pursuant to the massive outbursts from top party stakeholders and members demanding the dismemberment of the CECPC in the light of the minority judgment of the Supreme Court questioning the legality of the Committee and its activities at the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A reliable party source informed, that the agenda being pushed by the jittery committee is to persuade President Buhari to approve the return of the immediate past chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
According to the source, the plan was weighed against calls for Governor Buni and the committee to resign for a proper party leadership to take charge to escape avoidable legal hurdles as the 2023 elections approach.
The committee, PointNews understands want Oshiomhole to return and organise the convention of the party against which its action could be faulted later, should it be tried at the court.
Eminent party chieftains and legal experts have since yesterday clamoured for immediate exit of the party’s current leadership in view of the minority ruling.
Among them, Minister of State, Labour, Festus Keyamo, SAN, said the judgement implied that the APC must immediately halt the party’s congresses slated for this weekend.
Also, in a jointly signed statement, Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu and the president’s Senior Special Assistant, Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Ita Enang demanded the suspension of all party activities for the party’s legal team to reflect on the legality of its leadership to avoid future damages.
“While congratulating His Excellency, the Governor of Ondo state on the majority judgement of the Supreme Court upholding His election by striking out the Petition, decisions affecting the legality and Status of Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee was along delivered.
Respected legal practitioner, Dr. Kayode Ajulo in his reaction was explicit, demanding immediate resignation of the Yobe State Governor’s committee saying by the APC constitution forbids his hold as state governor and party chair simultaneously.
The APC has also slated a Press Conference for Thursday morning to react to the development.
